Directivity control

Beam steering speakers

Coverage shaped in the processor instead of on the rigging. V36 and C36 carry active directivity control today; a steerable column is in development.

A steerable column loudspeaker is in development. If you are specifying one for a church, station or atrium, talk to us about the timeline first.

Steering, in plain terms

Split a cabinet into driver sections, give each its own filtered and delayed feed, and the sections sum into a pattern you can aim without moving anything. Change the numbers in the processor, change where the energy goes.

Active directivity control today

The V36 for touring and the C36 for installation split their low and mid sections across separate amplifier channels under P-series control. That is how one hang feeds a floor and a balcony at different levels, and how the back of the box stays quiet.

Steering is not a room repair

Steering decides where energy goes, not what the room does with it. It will keep sound off a glass wall; it will not undo two seconds of reverberation. We model the room first and steer second.

Coverage shaped in the processor.
FAQ

Common questions

What is a beam steering speaker?

A loudspeaker whose vertical pattern is set electronically rather than mechanically. Separate driver sections receive individually filtered and delayed signals, and the sum aims the coverage where the design puts it.

Is active directivity control the same as beam steering?

Same principle, applied to array modules rather than a column: the V36 and C36 divide their sections across amplifier channels so the pattern is shaped in the P-series processor.

Does Quint make a steerable column?

Not yet — one is in development. For steerable coverage today we use V36 or C36 modules with P-series processing, which covers most of what a steerable column is asked to do, at higher output.

What do you need to steer a system?

Amplifier channels and processing per section, plus a model of the room. A P9 with the factory presets and enough A-series channels is the practical minimum.

Can steering replace acoustic treatment?

No. Steering keeps energy off reflective surfaces, which helps a great deal, but a room with a serious reverberation problem still needs treatment.
